The holiday season is upon us and many of us look forward to the most wonderful time of the year.

However, looming over the holidays is the fact that 75% of annual holiday weight gain happens during the holiday season. So how can you avoid gaining weight during the holidays?First, know that is possible to enjoy the holidays and not gain weight.

Here are my top tips for enjoying the holidays GUILT Free and still have a good time.

  1. Swap high calorie drinks for lower calorie drinks.

The holiday season is famous for rich beverages such as Eggnog, Hot Chocolate, and other delicious concoctions.  You don’t have to deprive yourself of enjoying these drinks but perhaps instead of drinking an 8-ounce glass of Eggnog, have half of a glass instead or add a splash of eggnog to your coffee.  Instead of throwing back a few glasses of your favorite drink, perhaps opt for 1 drink and perhaps switch to water.  It’s a great way to still enjoy a drink without the added calories.

  1. Make yourself a promise & keep it.

Decadent desserts and festive dishes are usually in abundant supply during the holidays.  It can be hard to pass it up. Promise yourself that whatever you eat, you would workout the calories. A glass of Eggnog is 340 calories per 8 ounce.  Pick your favorite exercise and burn those calories, no matter what the drink or dish is that you decide to savor.  Two things will happen, either you’ll be less tempted to eat more, or you’ll keep the promise to yourself.

  1. Avoid the left overs trap.

It can be tempting to enjoy leftovers long after the holiday season is over.  A great way to ensure that you don’t add on unnecessary pounds is to give away your left overs. If you have guest, pack them a takeaway box as they leave. They will appreciate it and you would have less temptation.  If you don’t plan to have guest, give it to someone in need.
